Which one has the most, potential to produce high purity quartz sand?
The source of high purity quartz raw materials is mainly divided into three kinds of crystal, vein quartz and granite pegmatite. Crystal deposits are generally small in scale and lack of resources, and are currently mainly used as raw materials for handicrafts; vein quartz deposits are generally small in scale and only part of them can be used as raw materials for high-purity quartz; pegmatite type high-purity quartz has the characteristics of large scale and high quality, and is an important object of future high-purity quartz-related exploration and research.
Feasibility Analysis on Preparation of High Purity Quartz Sand from Granitic Pegmatite
Pegmatite quartz resources usually have the advantages of large scale, less impurities, stable quality and low content of fluid inclusions. At present, high-end high-purity quartz products with high international recognition, such as the IOTA series products of Sibico (Sibelco) Company of the United States, are made of granite pegmatite vein from North Carolina of the United States. Sibelco Company uses the pegmatite of this deposit to produce 4N8 and above high-end quartz sand products almost monopolize the international market. There are also granite pegmatite veins with high purity quartz purification potential in China. Zhang Haiqi et al. successfully prepared 4N8 high-end high-purity quartz sand for pegmatite-type high-purity quartz deposits in the Altai region of Xinjiang using appropriate purification processes. Zhao Jinzhou and others found high-quality granitic pegmatite with mineralogical properties similar to those in the Sprusian region of North Carolina in the eastern Qinling Mountains, and obtained 4N high-purity quartz products through the process of calcination water quenching-crushing grinding-magnetic separation-ultrasonic cleaning-flotation-acid leaching. In addition, Zhang Haiqi et al. compared the Henan Lushi Longquanping pegmatite-type high-purity quartz deposit with the United States, and found that the two have similar metallogenic geological background and geochemical characteristics, and have high purification potential. Therefore, combined with the current research status of the preparation of high-purity quartz and the raw ore problems faced by the production of high-purity quartz in China, the preparation of high-purity quartz with granitic pegmatite as raw material has great research potential in China.
Characteristics of Granitic Pegmatite Ore
Granitic pegmatite is a light-colored granitic crystalline rock composed of coarse-giant-grained minerals, mostly in the form of veins, lenses, plates, rock species, irregular bodies, etc., often appearing as pegmatite groups. The pegmatite veins vary in size, ranging from tens of centimeters to hundreds of meters in width and extending up to several kilometers in length. Granitic pegmatite has a variety of internal structure zoning patterns, including uniform structure, zoning structure and layered structure; similar to granite in chemical composition, with higher rare metals and volatile content; from the Archean to the Miocene, the output tectonic background including orogenic, post-orogenic and non-orogenic. Granitic pegmatite is an important rock of rare metals, mica, ceramic feldspar, high purity quartz and precious stones. The formation process of granitic pegmatite is complex, and it is difficult to explain the whole process of pegmatite genesis with any simple viewpoint. Scholars at home and abroad have put forward a number of granite pegmatite genetic model in the long-term in-depth study. At present, it is mainly believed that granite pegmatite magma comes from magma differentiation or deep melting.
Distribution of pegmatite ore in China
(1) Granitic pegmatite in the East Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt, Henan
High-purity quartz natural minerals have been found in the pegmatites exposed in the East Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt of Henan Province. After joint research and field verification by Henan Provincial Bureau of Nonferrous Metals Geology and Mineral Resources and Institute of Geochemistry of Chinese Academy of Sciences, it is believed that the type of pegmatites occurring in quartz minerals is similar to that of Spruce Pine pegmatites in North Carolina, USA. There are few gas and liquid phase inclusions in quartz particles, and the content of impurity elements such as Al, Fe, Ti, Ca and Mg is less. Other basic characteristics of minerals are very similar to those of ultra-high purity quartz sand raw materials prepared abroad. Nearly 7000 granite pegmatite veins have been found in the East Qinling-Dabie orogenic belt of Henan Province, with an average density of about 86 pegmatite veins/km2, and nearly 400 medium-large pegmatite veins. The vein body is large in scale, the rock type and the structural characteristics of quartz minerals are similar to those of Spruce Pine granite pegmatite, and its whole rock quartz mineral content (40% ~ 45%) is greater than that of the latter (25% ~ 35%), which is expected to be developed into a raw material base for the preparation of high purity quartz sand.
(2) Longquanping pegmatite type high purity quartz deposit
Henan Lushi Longquanping pegmatite type high purity quartz deposit is located in the eastern part of the North Qinling structural belt. The ore deposit occurs in the Shicaogou Formation of Qinling Rock Group and the Zhaigen Formation of Xiahe Rock Group. The ore type is muscovite granite pegmatite type, and its main mineral components are albite (31% ~ 51%), microcline feldspar (11% ~ 20%), quartz (25% ~ 38%) and muscovite (7% ~ 9%), with a small amount of garnet (1% ~ 2%), biotite, etc. <1%); the SiO2 content of quartz minerals can reach 99.997 by deep purification. The pegmatite veins in the North Qinling area are large in number and scale, and the newly discovered Lushi Longquanping quartz deposit has similar geological characteristics to the Spruce Pine high-purity quartz deposit in the United States. The discovery of the Longquanping pegmatite type high-purity quartz deposit has an important demonstration and leading role in the geological exploration of high-purity quartz resources in China.
(3) Granitic pegmatite in Altai area, Xinjiang
The Altai region of Xinjiang, China, is a world-famous granitic pegmatite concentration area. In the metamorphic rock belt 413km long and 20~60km wide, tens of thousands of granitic pegmatite veins of various types are exposed, forming more than ten pegmatite dense areas, which have the endowment conditions of pegmatite type high-purity quartz resources. These pegmatite-type high-purity quartz veins occur in the Sinian-Lower Cambrian Kanas Group of the Qiongkur Terrane, and the ore type is muscovite pegmatite type, and its main mineral composition is quartz, potassium feldspar, plagioclase, muscovite and a small amount of biotite. Quartz particle size between 0.3~4mm, part of the quartz particles wrapped in feldspar. Quartz particles contain fluid inclusions in the non pure particle content is more, the particle fluid inclusions are mainly planar distribution, the size is smaller, more in 10 m, the type of rich liquid gas-liquid two-phase inclusions. By comparing the differences in geological background, mineralogy, petrology and geochemistry of the granite pegmatite in the area and the Spruce Pine area of the United States, Chen Peirong et al. believe that the Altai area has the prospect of finding high-purity quartz. Zhang Haiqi and others used impurity directional removal technology to further remove intercrystalline impurities and inclusion impurities in quartz minerals, and successfully prepared 4N8 high-end high-purity quartz sand with a SiO2 purity of 99.9983. This study points out the direction for the prospecting breakthrough of pegmatite type high purity quartz resources in China, and can effectively support the safe supply of key resource materials for strategic emerging industries in China.
(4) Other
The Guangdong Institute of Mineral Application found that the quartz sand selected from a granitic-granitic pegmatite deposit in Nanxiong has the characteristics of high water transparency, sharp edges and corners, and few cracks. This phenomenon attracted the attention of the testers. A series of petrographic comparison tests of quartz sand samples from different mines were carried out immediately. According to the screening of reference materials, Nanxiong granite-granite pegmatite quartz resource is the only high purity quartz resource in Guangdong Province at present.
